Corpus Christi College Founder Receives Papal Medal

Vancouver, BC - May 20, 2017. Corpus Christi College Founder and Former Executive Director Dr. Gerald Sylvester was awarded with a papal medal, the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, in 2016, for “his passionate role in fostering Catholic higher education”.

Unable to attend the award ceremony in November, 2016, Dr. Sylvester received the medal at the 2017 Convocation of St. Mark's College and Corpus Christi College. At the Convocation, Dr. David Sylvester, son of Dr. Gerald Sylvester and current Principal of King's College at Western University, spoke of his father's great achievements in advocating for Catholic higher education.

Established by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, this award recognizes remarkable service to the Church and is the highest recognition the laity can receive from the Pope.

Dr. Sylvester began his academic career at Notre Dame University in Nelson, BC, a Catholic liberal arts college, and was later instrumental in launching Corpus Christi College, fulfilling a long-time dream to establish a Catholic liberal arts college in Vancouver. Gerry served on the College’s first Board, and soon became its first Executive Director. He retired from the College in 2000, but continues to be an unflagging supporter.
