Rev. Dr. Mark Hagemoen Appointed as the New Principal/President for St. Mark’s/Corpus Christi Colleges

VANCOUVER, MARCH 18 – Following an international search conducted with the assistance of an executive search firm, the Board of Directors of both Colleges announced the appointment of Rev. Dr. Mark Hagemoen as President of Corpus Christi College and Principal of St. Mark’s College, effective July 1, 2011, for a five-year term. Corpus Christi, the liberal arts college, and St. Mark’s, the theological college affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC), are both located on the Vancouver campus of the university.

“Rev. Dr. Hagemoen’s broad experience in management including his membership on the Colleges’ boards, his years of devotion to the youth of the Lower Mainland, his leadership in developing programs, and his understanding of and commitment to the mission of St. Mark’s and Corpus Christi make him a superb fit as our next Principal and President,” said Neysa Finnie, Chair of the Boards. “We are continuing in the footsteps of the founders of the Colleges as well as the Catholic intellectual tradition by appointing a Roman Catholic priest at the helm.”

Born and raised in Vancouver, after completing his undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Arts) at the University of British Columbia, and a year of travel throughout Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe, Rev. Dr. Hagemoen entered St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ont., completing his Masters of Divinity degree. He was ordained in Vancouver by Bishop Lawrence Sabatini in May 1990. He completed the National Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies and the Diploma for Advanced Studies in Ministry in 1997. He earned a Doctor of Ministry program at Trinity Western University which he completed in 2007. In December 2007, Rev. Dr. Hagemoen was honoured by Pope Benedict XVI who recognized him as a “Prelate of Honour” with the title Monsignor for his work the Archdiocese.

In accepting the position, Rev. Dr. Hagemoen said, “I'm looking forward to expanding my role at the Colleges and to working with the community at St. Mark's and Corpus Christi Colleges in building on the progress that has been made in strengthening Catholic higher education in Vancouver. The development and success of these two Colleges is needed more than ever, as the Catholic intellectual tradition is called upon to respond to and engage the range of issues of our time.”

Rev. Dr. Hagemoen replaces Dr. John Stapleton who has been on secondment to the Colleges from the University of Manitoba.

“We thank Dr. Stapleton for his distinguished service to the Colleges and are grateful to the University of Manitoba for its generosity in permitting Dr. Stapleton’s secondment,” said Finnie. During his tenure, St. Mark’s College has begun its journey towards the formal accreditation of its graduate degree programs by the Association of Theological Schools, and Corpus Christi College has applied to the Province of British Columbia for authority to offer the Associate of Arts degree.
