St. Mark’s College, Providence Health Care and the St. Paul’s Foundation jointly appointed Rev. Dr. Mark Miller, C.Ss.R., as the third Visiting Scholar in Ethics in August 2023. After a successful year, Fr. Mark has been re-appointed to the role for the 2024-2025 academic year. This aligns with the Catholic Health Care Ethics Fund’s mission to foster teaching, research, and compassionate care within the local Catholic community.
Established in 2019 by the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the Visiting Scholar in Ethics position enhances learning opportunities at St. Paul’s Hospital and St. Mark’s College. Fr. Mark’s extensive experience in teaching ethics, Catholic health care ethics, and religious leadership uniquely qualified him for this role.
During his career, Fr. Mark has served as a clinical bioethicist at various institutions, including St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. He has also contributed to moral theology education and lay formation programs.
At St. Mark’s College, Fr. Mark taught Catholic Ethics and delivered presentations on ethics-related topics. His involvement with Providence Health Care included participating in clinical ethics seminars, offering talks on ethics engagement, and collaborating with the Mission team to support leadership formation and ministry work.
In addition to teaching at St. Mark’s and serving at Providence over the past year, Fr. Mark has also worked with the Centre for Christian Engagement, delivering a talk titled “We Know the Thou Shall Nots but What Shall We Do?: Changing the Face of Catholic Moral Theology.” He joined Dr. Anita Palepu, Department Head of Medicine at UBC and Providence Health Care, in a public discussion on integrating compassion and social justice in healthcare, advocating for marginalized communities and fostering inclusive environments rooted in empathy and solidarity. He also appeared on the What Matters Most podcast from St. Mark’s Centre for Christian Engagement.
