Rev. Dr. Mark Miller, C.Ss.R. Named the Third Visiting Scholar in Ethics for St. Mark’s College & Providence Health Care
Sep 5, 2023
St. Mark’s College, Providence Health Care, and the St. Paul’s Foundation are pleased to announce the appointment of the third Visiting Scholar in Ethics, Rev. Dr. Mark Miller, C.Ss.R. This position supports the local Catholic community dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health care needs of those served through compassionate care, teaching and research.
The Visiting Scholar in Ethics position is a component of the Catholic Health Care Ethics Fund established in 2019 by the Archdiocese of Vancouver. It is a collaboration to provide joint teaching, learning and health care delivery by enhancing learning opportunities in Ethics through clinical experiential learning, academic research, and teaching at St. Paul’s Hospital and St. Mark’s College.
Rev. Mark is a Redemptorist priest who holds a M.Div. from the Toronto School of Theology and a Ph.D. in Moral Theology from the University of Notre Dame (1992). His doctorate was entitled “Attending to a Common Language: Pursuing the Christian Specificity of Moral Theology out of the Thought of Bernard Lonergan, SJ” in which he grounded the discipline of ethics in the philosophical anthropology and methodology of Bernard Lonergan.
Rev. Mark brings many different talents to our institutions, with many years of experience in teaching ethics, in working in Catholic Health Care ethics, and in leadership in his religious order. He has worked as a clinical bioethicist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto, as an ethics consultant, as a lecturer in moral theology, as well as teaching in lay formation programs. Since 1975 he has held a number of leadership roles within the Edmonton Province (later Edmonton-Toronto Province) of the Redemptorists, most recently as Provincial (2009-2019) for the Edmonton-Toronto Province and as Regional Coordinator (2019-23) for the Redemptorist Province of Canada.
Among his teaching responsibilities at St. Mark’s College, he will be teaching Catholic Ethics in winter 2024. Rev. Mark will also be giving presentations throughout the academic year in different venues. At Providence Health Care, Rev. Mark will participate in clinical ethics seminars, will offer ethics talks through Ethics engagement sessions, as well as working with the Providence Health Care Mission team to advance Providence’s healing ministry work and support leadership formation.
He will continue his involvement with the Centre for Clinical Ethics in Toronto by teaching some virtual sessions in Catholic health care ethics.
We look forward to welcoming Rev. Mark in early September 2023.
