From Mennonite Roots to Catholic Scholar: Dr. John Martens’ Journey of Faith

Jun 9, 2025

In this episode of “Catholic Education Matters”, host Troy Van Vliet of Saint John Paul II Academy interviews Dr. John Martens from St. Mark’s College at the University of British Columbia, exploring his rich personal and academic journey into the Catholic faith. Dr. Martens shares how his fascination with Christianity led him from a Mennonite upbringing to Catholicism, through studies at esteemed institutions such as St. Michael’s College, McMaster University, and various international universities.

As the Director of the Centre for Christian Engagement at St. Mark’s College, Dr. Martens discusses the college’s pivotal role in theological education, its collaboration with other theological institutions, and the increasing demand for faith-based formation among Catholic teachers, deacon candidates, and lay ministers.

Together, they reflect on how a deeper engagement with Catholic theology—especially for those who did not grow up with it or who may have taken it for granted—can revitalize faith, inspire conversion, and equip individuals to serve meaningfully in both church and community life.
