Our Dream Soars Higher: Pope Francis’ Call to Civic and Political Love

Dec 6, 2024

Amid political turmoil, Pope Francis invites us to explore ways we can change our politics and our world for the better.

The Centre for Christian Engagement at St. Mark’s College, UBC presents a public lecture by Dr. Steven P. Millies.

Do we have a shared responsibility for each other and the world? How can we find common ground amid political turmoil?

Rising nationalism and populist political movements around the globe have disturbed the comfortable certainty we once enjoyed. We thought that some of the world’s ugly political past had been overcome. Amid the turmoil, Pope Francis invites us to dream of a different way that begins in how we interact with one another.  From simple beginnings, we can change our politics and our world.

Dr. Steven P. Millies

Dr. Steven P. Millies is associate professor of public theology and director of the Bernardin Center at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.  His scholarship explores the Catholic church’s relationship to politics in a perspective that embraces history, theology, law, ethics, sociology, philosophy, and political theory.

As Pope Francis has called for a “politics which is farsighted and capable of a new, integral, and interdisciplinary approach,” the work of Dr. Millies resists seeing politics only as a conflict over individual interests. Instead, in Pope Francis’s words, politics expresses our “conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for each other and the world.”

His most recent book is Good Intentions: A History of Catholic Voters’ Road from Roe to Trump (Liturgical Press, 2018).
