The Catholic Church as a Church of (the) Reformation: Why Catholics Can and Should Celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation

 
In 2017, Protestants will celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. How can and should Catholics respond?
 
The Decree on Ecumenism, promulgated by the Second Vatican Council, provides an answer. It obliges Catholics “to acknowledge and appreciate with joy the truly Christian values that flow from a common inheritance” with other Christians. One such value is the reformation of the Church. 
 
Join Dr. Hilmar Pabel, Professor of History at Simon Fraser University, where he has taught courses on the history of early modern Europe (1500-1800) since 1992. His scholarly publications reflect his research on the religious and intellectual history of the Renaissance and Reformation.
