Welcome Undergraduate Students

Vancouver, BC - September 1, 2017.

Dear Students,

Welcome (back!) to St. Mark’s College, the Catholic Theological College affiliated with the University of British Columbia! As a student in St. Mark’s B.A. program in Theology and Culture, you are part of the Community of St. Mark’s at UBC, which also includes St. Mark’s Parish, served by the Jesuit Fathers and our undergraduate sister institution, Corpus Christi College.

Catholic higher education brings together people of different backgrounds and faiths to help them to understand their vocation.  In your case, by enrolling in this program, you have identified your desire to embark on the important vocation of a Catholic teacher.   Preparing you for this calling, academically and spiritually, is both a privilege and a responsibility that we do not take lightly.

As a Catholic teacher myself, I know that real learning starts with good questions. Curiosity is a sign of an active mind, and our goal here at St. Mark’s  is to encourage your curiosity in order that you develop your mind as well as your personal commitment to the Truth of Christianity, which sits at the heart of the vocation of a Catholic teacher!  Working, studying and praying as one, we should strive to be, in the words of Pope Francis, “a community of people, animated by the Holy Spirit, who have lived and are living the wonder of the encounter with Jesus Christ and want to share this experience of deep joy, the message of salvation that the Lord gave us.” (Message for World Mission Day, May 19, 2013)
